Hugo Broos Biography

Hugo Broos (full name Hugo Henri Broos) is a Belgian football manager. He is currently manager of the South Africa national football team. The South African Football Association (SAFA) announced his appointment as the new Bafana Bafana coach on 5 May 2021.

His managerial career began in 1988. He has coached numerous teams incluing: R.W.D. Molenbeek, Club Brugge, Excelsior Mouscron, R.S.C. Anderlecht, K.R.C. Genk, Panserraikos F.C., Trabzonspor, Zulte Waregem, Al Jazira Club, JS Kabylie, NA Hussein Dey, Cameroon, KV Oostende and the South Africa national football team.

He coached Club Brugge from 1991 to 1998, winning the championship in 1992 and 1996. He also won the Belgian Cup in 1991, 1995 and 1996. Coaching RSC Anderlecht from 2002 to 2005, he got the team into the Champions League and his team won the 2003–2004 season championship. He won the prestigious Belgian Coach of the Year award four times in his career, twice while coaching Club Brugge (1992 and 1996), once with Anderlecht in 2004 , and with KRC Genk in 2007. He led the national team of Cameroon to victory in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.

As a player, he played for KFC Humbeek, R.S.C. Anderlecht, and Club Brugge. As a central defender for RSC Anderlecht, he helped the team win three European trophies, three national championships and four Belgian Cups. He helped Club Brugge win the Belgian Cup in 1986 and the championship in 1988.

He represented the Belgian national football team between 1974 and 1986, gaining 24 caps and finishing fourth at the World Cup in Mexico in 1986. He retired as a professional footballer in 1988.

New Bafana Bafana Coach Hugo Broos

On 5 May 2021, he was appointed as the new Bafana Bafana coach. “South Africa has a rich football history and is among the powerhouse on the continent. The country has full of quality and I am coming to coach a truly football nation with massive potential,” said Broos.

He said his first priority would be to build a completely new Bafana Bafana team that will make huge statement in coming major global tournaments such as the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup.

“My main focus will be to weave in new players who have hunger and desire to achieve things. Young players are ambitious and want to prove a point. I need to start from there because I want to build a strong Bafana Bafana side for the future,” he added.

He said the impending postponement of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers from June 2021 to to September 2021 will give him more time to prepare his team for Qatar 2022 where Bafana Bafana are in the same group with Zimbabwe, Ghana and Ethiopia.

“This is a really exciting project and I am really excited,” he concluded. The 69-year-old former Belgian international becomes the 19th head coach of the senior men’s national team after replacing Molefi Ntseki.
