Marty Haggard Biography

Marty Haggard is a popular American country music singer. He is the son of singer-songwriter, Merle Haggard. Between 1981 and 1987, Haggard charted five singles on the Hot Country Songs charts, in addition to performing in his father’s road band. He was named after Marty Robbins. At the time that Marty Haggard was born, his father, Merle Haggard, was serving time in San Quentin State Prison. Marty Haggard was raised by his grandmother in a railroad boxcar, but by the time the younger Haggard was 12, he had moved in with his father. He commenced an acting career in his teens. He had a recurring role in the CBS drama The Fitzpatricks, and a bit part in a TV movie starring Henry Fonda. While driving to the filming location of the TV movie, he stopped for a hitchhiker who then shot him and left him for dead. A wounded Haggard drove for 15 miles before spotting a 13-year-old girl who called an ambulance for him. He recovered fully but later developed an infection in the bullet wounds which required further surgery.

Dana Haggard, Oldest Daughter of Merle Haggard, Dead at 61

Merle Haggard’s oldest daughter, Dana, died on Tuesday (April 10); her half-brother, Ben Haggard, shared the news on social media on Wednesday (April 11). She was 61 years old.
“I know she’s hugging dad’s arm again,” Ben Haggard, sharing a photo of his sister and their father… “I’ll miss you sister. RIP.”
According to Bakersfield.com, Dana Haggard’s family believes she died in her sleep, either on Monday night (April 9) or Tuesday morning. Her sister, Kelli Haggard Patterson, tells the news outlet that Dana’s husband, Terry Lemons, left for work on Tuesday morning while she was still sleeping and found her in the same spot later that day. “It could have been heartache,” Ben Haggard says. “We just had the second anniversary [of our father’s death], and she was missing the old man. Who knows?” Dana Haggard was born in 1957, to Merle Haggard and his first wife, Leona Hobbs; however, according to Rolling Stone, on the day she was born, her father, then 19, was in jail for car theft. In fact, Dana Haggard would not get to know her father well until she was older: He went to jail for five years, for trying to break into a diner, when she was just an infant, and after his brushes with the law, he was often on tour. Dana Haggard was born in Bakersfield, Calif., but, according to her Facebook page, was living in Russellville, Ark., at the time of her death.
A musician herself, she was a member of her father’s band, the Strangers; she also used to perform with her brother, Marty Haggard, as Marty and Dana Haggard and the Driftwood Band, and sometimes performed with her brother, Noel Haggard. Dana Haggard died only a few days after the two-year anniversary of her father’s death. Merle Haggard died on April 6, 2016 — his 79th birthday. In addition to Dana, he had five other children: Kelli, Marty, and Noel with Leona Hobbs, to whom he was married from 1956 to 1964, and Jenessa and Ben with his fifth wife, Theresa Ann Lane, whom he married in 1993. In addition to her husband and siblings, Dana Haggard is survived by her four children, Mathew, Kelli, Jarod, and Michael; a stepson, Austin; and nine grandchildren. Memorial services for her will be held in both Arkansas and Bakersfield.

Haggard toured with his sister in the Driftwood Band for three years. Later, he served on an oil field. He signed with Dimension Records in 1979 and released one single, “Charleston Cotton Mill”, which spent three weeks on the Hot Country Songs charts in 1981. At his father’s request, Haggard joined his road band, in which he sang harmony and played rhythm guitar. He decided to start a solo career again in 1985. He then signed with MTM Records, for which he released four singles under the production of Billy Strangez. The most successful of these was “Trains Make Me Lonesome”, which peaked at number 57 on the country charts, and which helped him receive a nomination for Top New Male Vocalist from the Academy of Country Music.
“Trains Make Me Lonesome” was covered by George Strait on his 1992 album Holding My Own. By 1986, Haggard was married for six years to Shree and had two daughters. After the MTM singles, Haggard was seriously injured in a car accident, suffering a head injury and memory loss which required four years of recovery. He signed to Critique Records in 1995 and began recording Christian-themed music. His first Christian album, Borders & Boundaries, was released in 1996, with “Amnesia” and “Here in the Afterlife” as the singles. After stopping at a church in Conway, Arkansas, Haggard decided to take up music ministry. Haggard has since married Tessa and had one son named Jamey with her. He has also released two tribute albums to his father.

The youngest Haggard boy took Merle’s songs, bus and band on the road following his legendary dad’s 2016 passing. That backstory alone makes Ben the most visible Haggard heir. Plus, he’s the best singer of the bunch. Expect him to start adding original material into his set, which currently consists of his dad’s songs and a handful of classic country covers.
